How to convert website visitors into customers

So you’re doing everything you can to get visitors flocking to your website, but what about when they get there? How do you ensure that you grab their attention and get them to pick up the phone and/or part with their hard-earned cash? We’ll show you just how to convert website visitors into customers!

  1. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly
If your website isn’t yet mobile-friendly, Google will list it below other websites which are, so you’ll start to lose visitors… If people do find your website, research has shown that over 50% of visitors will abandon it if it takes more than 3 seconds to load on their smartphone. 61% of users said that they would quickly move on to a competitors’ website if they struggled to use a website on a mobile device (smartphone or tablet).
  2. Understand your audience
To ensure that your website appeals to the people you’re trying to sell to, you have to know who they are and what they like. Your brand (your logo, company colours, etc) should be carefully designed to convey the right message. The style of the website has to be appropriate: corporate or playful, elegant or quirky, striking or understated.
  3. Text should be short and to the point
According to the Nielson Norman Group, internet users spend just less than a minute on average on a website page. Time.com suggest that an average reader will spend as little as 15 seconds reading text on a web page. Although the research varies, the message is the same: keep text clear and concise. And remember the all-important Call To Action!
  4. Keep your content new and fresh
Google favours websites with new content, because they know that’s what appeals to website visitors. If you want people to keep coming back to your website, you’ve got to give them new stuff to come back for. Research conducted by Microsoft indicated that the first 10 seconds on a website is critical to whether the user will stay or go – if people don’t see anything new, they’re more likely to go than stay.
  5. If you sell online, focus on speed of delivery
In a recent survey by Acquity Group, 66% of consumers said that they are more likely to order from a company offering faster delivery. 87% of consumers prefer to order from a company offering delivery transparency (ie despatch / delivery information which is clear and well communicated).
