The Importance of Packaging Design

Packaging design is just as important as the brand and product, if your packaging is unappealing or looks cheap it reflects badly on what’s inside. Customers are less likely to trust a brand that doesn’t invest in its packaging.

The design of your packaging plays an important part in branding your items for retail. It helps your products to be easily recognisable and will draw buyers in. An eye-catching design will also differentiate your products from the competition, and with so much competition about it’s easy to get lost in the crowd.

Take a look at the shelves when you next go shopping. Which products stand out and why?

Protect the goods

Not only does your packaging need to look good, but it also needs to perform well. It needs to stand up to the rigours of the store shelf and protect the product from damage. Think of the reduced shelf in a supermarket, all those battered and ripped boxes and packets! No one wants their stock to end up like that.

A designer will take function as well as aesthetics into account when designing packaging. You may think you know what you want, but it may not be suitable. Any designer worth their salt will take your ideas and turn them into a fully functioning design.

What’s in the box?

The first thing to consider with packaging design is what is it going to hold. Is it a piece of cake, a bottle of perfume, a bar of chocolate? Does it need special storage? If the product needs to be refrigerated, you will need a special coating on any card used. Don’t make the packaging a lot bigger than the product, people are wary of overpackaged items and will steer clear of companies whose environmental awareness isn’t up to scratch. And keep plastic to a minimum where possible.

What’s on the box?

The main element of your design will be your logo, followed by a description of the product. Think about your USP, why should people buy from you? Shout about what your brand stands for, you need to grab people’s attention. Is it Vegan? Is it made in the UK?

What makes your product(s) better than the competition? Are they ethically sourced? Made with local ingredients or handmade? Think about your target market and write to appeal to them.
